Discovery IAU Circular No. 3331 (1979 Feb. 23) announced the discovery by N. S. Chernykh (Crimean Astrophysical Observatory) of a diffuse, comet-like object on two photographic plates obtained on 1978 December 22. The magnitude was given as 16. Positions
Analysis The 1985 March issue of the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society said that although the object was initially announced as a comet, it subsequently received the minor planet designation of "1978 YL1".
